Toboggan Clinic

Belleayre

Required for all patrollers who are taking the Senior S&T clinic evaluation. Recommended for anyone "thinking" about participating in the "Senior" program. The focus will be on the specific toboggan skill objectives needed to meet the "Senior" requirements. Pre-registration is required via a phone call to me, no later than February 1st.

March 2, 2002 - 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Senior Clinic / Evaluation

Belleayre

Pre-registration is required two weeks prior to the event (1/18/02), in writing with your Patrol Director's authorization (signature).

A minimum of 6 patrollers is needed to run this event.

During the 2000-01 ski season, the ski and toboggan clinics that were held, were judged to be fun, enlightening and overall successful. Thank you to the trainers involved with these clinics. Unfortunately, there has been some confusion regarding registering candidates for the Senior Clinic / Evaluation and the number of patrollers participating in this event is very, very low. Although talking with me about your interest in the program is wonderful, (and I will always be interested in hearing from you), I need a registration form in hand with your Patrol Director's signature two weeks prior to the event. Both Regional and Divisional staff need to make accommodations to attend this event. Without the registrations, I have no way of knowing the number of patrollers expected to participate. I appreciate your support and understanding in this matter.

If there is a conflict with the "Senior" evaluation date, please contact me. I need to be the person to contact other regions if that is needed. The two-week pre-registration requirement also needs to be applied if you are considering participating in an event outside the SNY region. Additionally, my signature must accompany the registration to verify that a patroller has participated in training.

SNY S&T Trainer/ Evaluator Staff

The SNY region is still looking for a few good patrollers who are interested in becoming Trainer / Evaluators. A few people showed great interest last year and I hope they will consider pursuing being an evaluator again this year. Strong skills in teaching, skiing and toboggan handling are needed. If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can work together on training. I will have more information regarding Trainer / Evaluator clinics in December. The following patrollers continue to be Trainer / Evaluators for the SNY region: Jim Bode, Diana Calligaro, Chad Storey, Joe Strauss, and Kimberly Terwilliger.

Toboggan Instructors

The following patrollers are active toboggan instructors in the region: Aiva Drukovskis, Jeffrey Gilbert, Bob Hamilton, Roni Mattiello, Rick Parrish, John Puppolo, Jeri Rohling, and Mike Wettstein. Some changes are being made in the process to become a toboggan instructor. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please contact me in December. I will have further information at that time.

Senior Continuing Education Requirements

The three-year continuing education ski and toboggan requirements continue to be in place. A regional Trainer/ Evaluator must be present and provide an educational component to the refresher. Patrols need to forward information to me regarding who has completed the refresher. If anyone has questions or concerns, please contact me.

Auxiliary Patrollers

Pat Blenk, SNY Auxiliary Advisor

It takes a team to get the job done. It takes team work, especially in an emergency situation for things to run smoothly and the best work to be accomplished. Don't forget, Auxiliary Patrollers, you are an important part of the NSPS Team.

We never know just when we will be called into action to pull together as a team to get a job done. Having the know-how and practicing how to do the work and who will do what is an important part of being prepared for any emergency.

All emergencies can be surmounted as long as you stay calm, have a plan and impelment it. Plan ahead and think of what you can do to make the team work more effectively in an emergency.

Hopefully, our NSPS Team will not have any disasters to face this coming season, but if we should, work now to be prepared.

If I can be of help or if anyone has questions, please feel free to contact me.

Lift Evacuation

Bill Blenk, SNY Lift Evacuation Advisor

Wishing everyone a very safe and productive ski season with lots of snow.

Lift Evac AdvisorBill BlenkLife Evac Administrator

It's refresher time again and that includes Evac Practice. Over the years, I have attended many such practices. Each area's Lift Evac Procedure is unique to that area. On occasion, a patroller, usually an experienced one, will come with an idea to alter, change or improve this unique area procedure. Some of these suggestions are good, but keep in mind, changes require practice, and lots of it-so if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Patrol directors might want to consider inviting their local Fire Department and / or EMS personnel to their Lift Evac Practice. In the event of a real lift evac, the added personnel can be a real asset, and if needed, they won't be coming in cold. (No pun intended)

I must advise you that if you do call in a fire department for help, they will be required, by law, to take charge of the incident. It has been my experience that this should not be a problem. Often, patrollers are also members of the local Fire / EMS Departments. This can be a real plus to any patrol.

Don't forget to check the ropes-and-knots for fraying, mildew, cuts or other signs of wear or damage. Always stress safety.

If you have any questions, you can call me or e-mail me.

Student Patrollers

Mary Mueller, SNY Student Patroller Advisor

The 2000-2001 ski season proved to be another successful year at Belleayre for our student patrollers. We completed our season by taking our group on the road to our sister mountain, Whiteface, for 3 full days of skiing and fun. The weekend was attended by 10 student patrollers and 9 seasoned patrollers from Belleayre. In the past 2 years our group has really grown. At the completion of the 2001 season we have 12 student patrollers on our mountain. We would like to welcome Emily Mueller to our family at Belleayre and we wish our "senior" student patrollers, Adam Corrado, Gerrit Leonard, and Andrew Steinberg success in their college pursuits. We hope they will leave time in their busy schedules to come and visit. I want to thank them for their commitment and dedication to Belleayre Mt. and it's Ski Patrol. Thanks for the memories guys!

Other than our group, the only other student patroller that I know of is Peter Hilligas on duty at both Sterling Forest and Mountain Trails Nordic. If your patrol has student patrollers, please let me know. Perhaps we can get them all together this year for some fun. You can reach me at (914) 562-8589 or at MCM1125@aol.com

Please encourage young people to join your patrol. Students on your mountain keep you young, in touch, and keep it fun.

Letter From the Editor

Hi! First, I must apologize to everyone for getting this news-letter out so late, in particular to those who got their articles to me on time, to the region staff that assumed the newsletter would announce their events in a timely manner and to any patroller who did not attend an event he/she would have had they received this newsletter in a timely manner.

A number of different cir-cumstances contributed to the lateness of this newsletter. How-ever, the main reason is that I have had to deal with family health problems, resulting in a death in the family, for several extremely difficult months. I apologize to all.

Once again, I am your SNY Region Newsletter Editor. I am here to serve you - the readership. Please send me your arti-cles, suggestions, comments, and ideas. Let me know if you like what is published. Do you have any questions or suggestions for the Regional officers? I will con-tact them and get a response for you.
